What an EAV Reading Measures
EAV stands for Electrodermal Acupuncture According to Voll, after the German physician Dr. Reinhold Voll, who developed the method in the 1950s. It measures how easily a very small, low-voltage current passes through your skin at specific acupuncture points.
Most of those points sit at the ends of your fingers and toes, and each is associated with an organ or body system. A full set of readings forms a map, not a single score.
You may also see it called electrodermal screening (EDS), electroacupuncture or meridian stress assessment.

Inside an EAV Session
The test is quiet and hands-on. You stay seated and clothed, with shoes and socks off so we can reach the points on your feet.
- 1Your history firstWe review symptoms, past labs and goals so the reading has context.
- 2Holding the electrodeA smooth metal electrode in one hand completes the circuit with the meter.
- 3Point by pointA blunt probe touches points on your fingers and toes. Nothing breaks the skin.
- 4Testing remediesRemedies can be placed in the circuit to see how a reading responds.
- 5Reviewing it togetherWe walk you through the pattern and what follow-up makes sense.
Who Considers EAV Testing
Many patients come to us after hearing for years that their results look normal while they still feel unwell. EAV widens the search.
- Chronic fatigue that rest and routine labs have not explained.
- Lyme disease and mold illness, where toxic overload may play a part.
- Digestive problems such as SIBO, IBS and histamine intolerance.
- Suspected sensitivities that could shape your allergy care.
- Long-standing inflammation or a chronic condition without clear answers.
- Patients in treatment who want to see how readings shift over time.
What EAV Can and Cannot Tell You
EAV is a complementary assessment, and its readings can shift with skin moisture, probe pressure and technique. We treat results as clues to follow up, never as a verdict.
What it can do
- Give a quick, non-invasive view across many body systems
- Point us toward areas that deserve further testing
- Set a baseline to compare with later readings
What it cannot do
- Diagnose a disease or rule one out
- Replace an exam, bloodwork or imaging
- Stand in for urgent care when you have urgent symptoms
How EAV Fits Our Specialized Testing
EAV is one part of our specialized testing. Each test answers a different question, so we rarely rely on one alone.
EAV testing
A map of systems that may be under strain. It tells us where to look next and which remedies to consider.
Heart rate variability
The timing between heartbeats, recorded while you rest, shows how your nervous system handles stress. Read more about HRV testing.
Thermography
A heat image of the body surface that adds a visual picture of inflammation patterns. We use it beside EAV when that picture helps your plan.
Customized blood, urine and saliva tests
Measured levels, deficiencies and disease markers. This is how we confirm or rule out what an EAV reading suggests. See our lab testing.

EAV Testing Questions, Answered
What patients in Scottsdale ask before their first reading.
What is EAV screening?
EAV, or Electrodermal Acupuncture According to Voll, measures skin conductance at acupuncture points on the hands and feet, each associated with an organ or body system. We use the pattern as a guide for where to look more closely.
How accurate is electrodermal testing?
EAV is not a diagnostic test, and readings can shift with skin moisture, probe pressure and technique. We never act on a single reading, and we confirm what it suggests with your history, an exam and lab work.
Is electrodermal screening the same as EAV?
Yes, the names overlap. EDS, electroacupuncture and meridian stress assessment all describe skin conductance testing at acupuncture points, and EAV is the original method. Devices differ, so how the reading is interpreted matters more than the name.
Does EAV testing hurt?
No needles are used and nothing breaks the skin. Most patients feel only light pressure from the blunt probe on their fingers and toes.
How much does EAV testing cost in Scottsdale, AZ?
Cost depends on whether EAV is done on its own or as part of a broader testing plan. We review pricing with you at your consultation, before any testing begins.
