What Heart Rate Variability Measures
A healthy heart does not tick like a metronome. The gap between one beat and the next changes by a few milliseconds all the time, and HRV is the measure of that change.
Those shifts are steered by your autonomic nervous system (ANS), the part of the nervous system that runs breathing, digestion and heart rate without your input. A flexible ANS moves easily between alert and calm, which usually shows up as higher HRV for your age. A system stuck in stress mode tends to show lower, flatter variability.
HRV is not a diagnosis. It adds an objective view of nervous system balance to your history, symptoms and lab results.
When an ANS Reading Can Help
Many of our patients live with chronic, elusive illness and have been told their tests look fine. HRV adds a view of how hard the nervous system is working to keep up.
Chest pain, fainting or a racing heart that will not settle need emergency care first, not an HRV test.
- Fatigue that rest does not fix, including chronic fatigue syndrome
- Lyme disease, mold illness or toxic overload
- Stress, anxiety or a wired feeling that never switches off
- Poor sleep and slow recovery from exercise or illness
- SIBO, IBS or histamine intolerance with stress-linked flares
- A baseline before treatment, to track progress over time
How to Read Your HRV Number
Online charts promise a good HRV for every age, yet two healthy people of the same age can read very differently. Context matters more than the number on its own.
We explain your result in plain terms and show you what it means for your plan.

Clinic Reading Versus a Smartwatch Score
Wearables estimate HRV during daily life, which is useful for spotting trends. An in-office reading is taken at rest under steady conditions and read by a clinician.
- Steady ConditionsRecorded while you rest, so the reading is comparable
- Read by a ClinicianExplained by the person who treats you
- Read With Other TestsViewed beside labs, EAV and thermography
- Rechecked Over TimeRepeat readings show if your plan is working

What Moves Your HRV Day to Day
HRV responds to how you live, which makes it a useful way to see change. These factors can raise or lower a reading within days.
- Sleep: short or broken sleep often lowers HRV the next day.
- Stress load: ongoing mental or physical stress keeps the system on alert.
- Illness and inflammation: infection or a flare can pull HRV down.
- Alcohol and late meals: both commonly lower overnight HRV.
- Hard training: a heavy workout can dip HRV until you recover.
- Slow breathing: calm, paced breaths support the parasympathetic branch.
Your HRV Visit, Step by Step
The reading is quick, painless and needs no needles. Most of your visit is spent on what the result means for you.
- 1ConsultationWe go over your symptoms, history, sleep, stress and past test results.
- 2The Resting ReadingYou sit or lie quietly while sensors record the timing of your heartbeats.
- 3InterpretationWe read your HRV with your labs and any EAV or thermography findings.
- 4Plan and RecheckYour result shapes your plan, and later readings track your progress.
